Slow Down!

This weight loss experience been quite a journey!

* The food hasn't always been my favorite but I've grown to like it.
* It isn't exactly cheap but I can't put a price on my health.
* I do feel hungry sometimes but I know it won't be like this forever.
* It seems like I've doing this for a long time but the weight loss has been FAST!
* My motivation was originally just to not let my hard-earned money go to waste. However, I lost 3 pounds the very first day and that made me want to see how far I could go.
*I wanted something that worked quickly and this has been ideal for me.
* I've learned that water is crucial! I drink 100 ounces every day.

I no longer workout though.

When I signed up for the Mud Factor 5K, I started training with a C25K (Couch to 5K) app. It was hard at first but I really learned to enjoy my morning run. I also did Zumba or some form of cardio every night. But I started to notice that the weight on my scales was staying the same.

This chart shows my progress from week to week:
Notice the place I have circled.
That was during my C25K training.

The Take Shape For Life plan is made for people who don't have time to think about dieting. All the guess work has been taken out of what/when to eat. The amount of calories I eat in a day (between 600-900) simply isn't enough to sustain extra expenditures of energy. It put my body into "fat storage" mode: hanging on to everything it could to survive.
As soon as I quit running, I started losing weight again.

So, I'm trying to stay focused on my goal weight.
I WILL run again.
Just. . . later. =)
BTW: If ^THIS^ is your awesome work,
please let me know so I can give you props! =)

DIY: Body Wrap Tutorial

I don't know about you but I get a little paranoid during swimsuit season.
It seems like there are so many toned, tanned, cellulite-free people out there!
But I am not one of them.
It takes me some time to get up the courage to reveal
The Twin White Dolphins (aka: my thighs) in public.

But here's a little secret I've learned that makes baring it more bearable. =)
Just in time for the Fourth of July,
I give you: THE DIY BODY WRAP!

My good friend Rosa told me this is what she does the night before she'll be in a swimsuit.
You can do it on your stomach, thighs, upper arms, even neck; wherever your “trouble spots” are.
The idea behind this is to help your body release water that’s retained due to weather, food consumption; even Mother Nature’s visits. ;) I've known high school wrestlers who use a similar technique before tournaments in order to "make weight".
The combination of lotion and plastic helps sweat out retained water.

You only need 3 things:
  • Lotion (it's best if it contains something from the ocean: seaweed, kelp, mud. I couldn't find any, so I just used what I had on-hand. I've even heard that PrepH works well!)
  • Plastic wrap
  • Bandage

It’s a simple process!

Step 1 – Apply a thick layer of lotion to the area you want to target. {Don't rub it in completely!} You can do it on your stomach, your thighs, your upper arms, wherever your “trouble spots” are.

Step 2 – Wrap the ENTIRE area with your plastic wrap. I went all the way around my mid-section several times. Make it snug but not tight; you do have to wear it ALL night long.

Step 3 – Now wrap the area with a long bandage of some kind, anything that will keep your wrap in place. Be sure to cover the plastic completely.

Secure it well and you’re ready to hit the sack!
This particular time I lost a half inch off my middle
and I LOVED the result!
Let me know how it goes for you!
I originally published this as a guest at I Heart Nap Time on June 2, 2013 {click here}.

Top 10 Running Songs

After several weeks of running, I'm really learning to love it!
I look forward to seeing how far/fast I can go.

I see a lot of other people when I'm out; everyone has their own pace, their own style, their own system. I'm always surprised by those that can run without music. I HAVE to have music!
I don't enjoy hearing my own panting and struggling for breath; it makes me tired!

I listen to music whenever I exercise. But it has to be different kids for different workouts.
When I run, I like something upbeat; when I lift, I like stuff that's a little more intense
(check it out here).
I have everything from Neil Diamond to Usher, Led Zepplin to Super Junior and everything in between
(minus country: it does nothing for me!).

Anyway, these are my TOP 10 favorite songs for running
{in no particular order}:
1- Lenny Kravitz: American Woman
2- Gym Class Heroes: The Fighter
3- Will Smith: Party Starter
4- Linkin Park: Waiting For The End
5- Skrillex: Bangarang
6- Imagine Dragons: Radioactive
8- 2Pac/Dr. Dre: California Love (radio edit)
9- David Guetta/Sia: Titanium
10- Selena Gomez: Come & Get It

Now, what song gets YOU moving?

9 Safe Summer Workout Tips

Tomorrow is supposed to be 118° here in Phoenix.
NOT COOL!
{{literally}}
I was happy when I came across this article on WebMD.com with summer workout tips. I was not happy however, when I couldn't pin it because there weren't any graphics.
NOT COOL!

So here's a summary of their
9 ways to keep your summer workouts safe:

1- ACCLIMATE YOURSELF~ Get outside when temperatures are more bearable to work up to hotter times. Personal trainer and marathoner Carla Branch prepares her clients at least 2 weeks in advance for high temperature events.

2- STAY HYDRATED~ That should be a no-brainer but you might be surprised how much you actually need! Establish a habit of drinking 20oz of water 2 hours before a workout and 8 more just before you go out in the heat; then drink more every 15-20 minutes during your workout. With my diet, I drink 4 liters (135oz) of water a day and really feel the difference when I don't!

3- SLOW DOWN~ When temperatures are in the 90's (or way above!), slow your pace. Give yourself permission to take a little more time. It's ok to think healthy when you're trying to get healthy!

4- WEAR LIGHT CLOTHING~ Clothes should be light in weight to avoid generating extra heat. They should also be light in color to reflect the sun. I'm one of those people that wears sunscreen all the time! But it keeps my skin looking younger. I avoid direct sun exposure during the hottest parts of the day.

5- EXERCISE EARLY OR LATE~ Get out there early! I usually try to get my run in before 6am. Not only is it cooler, but I have more time to get other things done. BONUS!

6- ASSESS THE PREVIOUS DAY~  It isn't enough to only think about how you feel right before going out to exercise in the heat. Exercise physiologist Jaime Roberts says, "It’s very important with those who exercise regularly to take into account the physical activity, fluid ingestion, and diet of the previous day. You could be dehydrated or fatigued even prior to exercising," which happens faster on a hot day. (She's from Texas so I'd take her word for it!)

7- KNOW YOUR ROUTE~ Make sure there's some shade along your way to avoid constant sun exposure. If you live in a dry climate, like the desert Southwest, says Roberts, remember that sweat evaporates quickly. You’re going to lose a lot more fluid exercising in the heat in Phoenix than Portland. And because it’s drying almost before you can see it, you don’t know how much fluid you’re losing.

8- CONSULT YOUR DOCTOR~ There are a lot of medications (RX and OTC) that contribute to dehydration. Even caffeine can accelerate the effects of dehydration.

9- USE COMMON SENSE~ Although "common sense" is no longer common, listen to your body. If you aren't feeling well, even if it's only been a half hour, get back inside. Don't choose the hottest day of the year to try rock-climbing. You want to live to play another day!

C25K: Week 2

I made it through 2 weeks!
I know that doesn't sound very impressive but for someone who HATES to run,
I am nailing this!

Week 1's schedule was 3 days of
1) 5-minute warm-up walk
2) 8 reps of 60 second running and 90 second brisk walking
3) 5-minute cool-down walk

I just finished Week 2 which was 3 days of
1) 5-minute warm-up walk
2) 6 reps of 90 second running and 2 minutes brisk walking
3) 5-minute cool-down walk

Next is Week 3 and I'll start 3 days of
1) 5-minute warm-up walk
2) 2 reps of 90 seconds running and 90 seconds walking
3) 2 reps of 3 min running, 3 minute walking
3) 5-minute cool-down walk

I'm kind of dreading running for 3 minutes (WIMP ALERT!!) but
I've come so far that I don't want to stop now!

C25K: Day 3

I really think I'm getting the hang of this!
I have never liked to run but I find myself
looking forward to how I going to do.
{Does that make sense?}

I was up on time today and headed out ASAP.
I did pretty well; the farthest I've gone so far!

The best part?
Coming around the corner to my home and seeing my
husband standing there, cheering me on.

He seriously walked down the street to wait for me.
Then he took this su-WEET picture:
Thanks, Babe. I owe you one! :P

It's not my favorite photo but it helps me remember the moment
so I'm ok with it. It made me think:

Can't wait to see what Week 2 brings!

C25K: Day 2

Not gonna lie,
today's run was rough!

I am NOT a runner.
I've never enjoyed running.
I hated PE in school because it made me sweaty and gross.

I am SO out of shape!
Although, technically, ROUND is a shape,
it's not the one I'm partial to.

I slept in this morning.
I didn't wake up until after 8.
Usually, I run at 5 because I live in HADES {aka Phoenix}.
It was already 92* when I rolled out of bed.

I ran anyway.
It sucked but I'm still alive.

I was drained!

I took my dog, Nutmeg, along with me.
The Stud found her in the kitchen:
Poor Baby Girl!
I learned my lesson: NO MORE SLEEPING IN!
Bring on Day 3!

C25K: Day 1

Today I started training for a 5K.

I have no idea what it takes to train for that so
I downloaded an app called C25K by Running Double.

Today was Day 1 so the app prompted me through a
1.86 mile run, with running and walking intervals.

I started out great, VERY pumped!
And then my body got mad at me.
My ears were ringing, my throat was burning, and my sinuses were itching.

But I kept going.

Every time it said "RUN!", I ran.
It wasn't always fast, but I did it.
Can I get a HALLELUJAH?!!
The app starts out with 3 running days per week so
I figured tomorrow I'll open the Xbox Zumba I got for Christmas. =)

FRIDAY FUNNIES: New Foods

I've been eating the foods for my diet for a month now.
It's pretty good {for the most-part} but sometimes. . .

What's your advice for trying new foods?

Smart Snacks

I've lost 14 pounds so far!!

This diet has me searching for long-term maintenance ideas.
I found some healthy snack options Diabetic LivingSWEET!
These are my favorites:

Cauliflower Popcorn: Break a head of cauliflower into popcorn-like, bite-size florets, then spread them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Spray the cauliflower lightly with butter-flavor cooking spray, then sprinkle lightly with turmeric, freshly ground pepper, and sea salt. Bake 20 to 30 minutes at 425* or until the cauliflower is slightly browned. (1 cup = 29 cal., 5 g carb., 0 g fat, 2 g pro.)

Thin Pretzels (11 pretzels/1 ounce = 110 cal., 21 g carb., 0 g fat, 2 g pro.)
The bonus with choosing thin, crispy pretzels rather than a big sourdough hard pretzel is that you get 11 pretzels instead of one for about the same calories and carbs. That gives you a lot more chewing action, which may better satisfy your appetite and urge to munch.

Mini whole wheat bagel with strawberry reduced-fat cream cheese (1 topped bagel = 155 cal., 28 g carb., 3 g fat, 7 g pro.) The carb, fat, and calorie counts of most doughnuts don't fit very well into healthy eating plans. A mini whole wheat bagel with a smear of strawberry reduced-fat cream cheese gives you a sweet, chewy treat that's a good source of fiber and protein. Feeling festive? Go ahead and scatter a few rainbow sprinkles on the cream cheese.

Tootsie Roll Pop (1 pop = 60 cal., 15 g carb., 0 g fat, 0 g pro.) instead of M&M's (1/4 cup = 256 cal., 37 g carb., 11 g fat, 2 g pro.) When nothing but chocolate candy will do, go for a lollipop with a chocolaty center.

Pizza Kabobs: On a skewer, string half of a Mini Babybel light cheese round, 4 slices of pizza-style Canadian bacon, and 2 each of cherry tomatoes, white mushrooms, green pepper wedges, and 1-inch cubes of Focaccia or French bread. Brush assembled skewers with light Italian salad dressing, and broil or grill until vegetables are tender. Serve with heated pizza sauce. Pizza kabobs give you the pizza flavor you love without the heavy hit of carbs from the crust.

With these options, I think I might be able to actually stay healthy!
Happy snacking!
